Unilever: Stop the Cruelty, Reinstate Your Global Cage-Free Commitment
Hold Unilever Accountable: Reinstate Global Cage-Free Eggs Now!
In 2018, Unilever pledged to source 100% cage-free eggs globally. This was a promise to millions of hens — and to the consumers who trusted Unilever to deliver on its commitments worldwide. For a time, progress was made in North America and Europe, where Unilever met the pledge. But just months ago, Unilever abandoned their global commitment, leaving millions of hens in other regions confined in archaic cages, enduring suffering that is entirely preventable.
This rollback is not just animal cruelty — it is global inequity. Hens in North America and Europe live out of cages, while millions elsewhere remain trapped in the worst forms of confinement. It's not only the hens who are losing: consumers outside of these regions are denied the same standard of product as Western customers. What does this inequity say about how Unilever values its non-Western consumers?
We demand that Unilever:
- Reinstate their 100% global cage-free egg commitment across all regions immediately.
- Publish a clear, actionable plan for achieving 100% cage-free sourcing worldwide, including practical solutions like egg credits to bridge supply gaps where cage-free eggs are limited.
Unilever uses roughly 4,932,384 hens and produces 1,386,000,000 eggs per year. Every day these hens remain caged is another day consumers in non-Western markets are sold products produced through cruelty and another day Unilever chooses profit over ethics.
Unilever claims to be an industry leader, but by abandoning basic animal welfare reforms, they are falling behind competitors: Kellanova, General Mills, Kraft-Heinz, and many more. Their rollback is a choice, not an impossibility — and it exposes their hypocrisy to consumers worldwide.
